hello all,from windsor originally ,now live in alberta.Never went to the track when it was open,but after it closed they had saturday night race's.Last time that we were there a corvette lost control and hit a girl who was sitting on the gaurd rail,we got out of there before the cops had the road closed down.sure was a long time ago.

We have a pretty cool race track out here,ithas both drag and oval and even a road course.Race city speedway is the site.

what ever happened to checkerflag speed way?

love the old pics on your site hope you find more.

Check Flag closed at the end of the 1992 season and the site is now housing.

Hello to anybody out there. Presently own a 55 Chev Nomad that ran at Windsor Dragway. It was gold in colour then was painted silver with red stripes on the roof. Stripes were running along the roof rail. Does anybody have any info or photos of this car? I have some photos of the black and gold Charger called UFO sponsored by Shadowoods Auto, the Hurst Cuda Hemi Under Glass, and a wheelstanding red and black VW pickup if anyone is interested. All were taken at Windsor Dragway but I'm not certain of the year.

Does anyone know the track photographer from Windsor Dragway around 1967 or 1968? I won my class several times but never bought the picture of my car and now I wish I had. A needle in a hay stack?

Does anyone know what killed this track way before it's time? Was it noise compaints? I can't believe it was unprofitability, if opening day was any indication.

It's just been announced that part of the site of the former Windsor Dragway will be used for a new slots/horse race track and 6500 seat arena complex.

I was out there this past weekend geting some photos .

Paul worked there from the start, his cousin owned the track so he's got a few things. He was the one wearing the Gold Jacket.

HI , I LIVE IN ALBERTA NOW BUT SPENT A LOT OF TIME AT BOTH CHECKERED FLAG AND WINDSOR DRAGWAY IN LATE SIXTIES EARLY SEVENTIES MY BROTHER AND HIS CLUB HAD A PREFECT THAT USED TO RUNN GASSER AND I WAS PART OF A CREW THAT HAD A NOVICE CLASS STOCK CAR AT CHECKERED . Some were asking what lead to Windsor Dragway closing?

After talking with Sandy Elliot who was the crew chief for the Border Bandits of Barrie Poole and John Elliot, I learned the following.

Apparently the track was used in the off hours/off season to store new cars from one of the auto assembly plants in the area until they could be hauled away by car carriers. The weight of the cars sitting on the track over time caused it to get some indentations from where the wheels of the new cars constantly sat. It created a washboard effect on the track, which led to a lousy racing surface. It was expensive to have it repaved, so that lead to the demise of the track

I too have taken a walk down the ole' strip&it still seems like a venue that could work,given the proximity to a highway&a new group of enthusiast who are currently racing on streets or highways.Will windsor ever get a new arena?...If that be true than why a location so isolated from core fans. I think that a grass roots eighth mile track cared for by local racers could work and have perminent value.

Yeah it's a shma that we no onger have a track in Windsor anymore. the Government, and all the whiners think street racing is so bad, yet they wont give us an outlet. 5 or 6 years ago Alex Pissenault tried outting in a rcaing complex just outside of Windsor, but the Govn't wanted there pockets so deeply lined before hand that they nixxed the deal. back in the mid eighties, old Windsor raceway was still "not that bad". I was 16 at the time and actually raced my 77 chevy, against 85 Monte SS. he spun the tires forever, I won! its a total crap hole now. the town of Techumseh expropriated it a while back, and it will soon be developed into something residential.

-i think if we want a track we the people should do something about it i am 18 years old and i drive an 81 camaro z28 with a 454 and a 4 speed and i would lovew a track to race at instead of using the streets where it is less safe

Right about 20 seconds you can see Cascar driver Bob Merrifield tearing it up..

I agree we need a track around here, even an eighth mile would be terrific.

why cant we rebuy the land of the windsor dragway from tecumseh. i'm sure there are plenty of investers out there to rebuild the track. i know myself i'm willing to invest in starting up a group to rebuild the track. at least this way we would'nt have to go all the way to the grand bend track. what does everyone else think.
